Monthly Wrap-Up: January ’21

January was a month where I wanted to read so much, but I just could not find the time to get through a lot of books. I read four books this month, but it did include a near-600 page novel, so I feel like that kind of counts as two books. Let’s have a moment of silence as I got rejected for an eARC of The Mirror Season by Anna-Marie McLemore on NetGalley and will be crying about this until the book comes out, but on the plus side I did get offered an ARC of Once Upon a Quinceañera by Monica Gomez-Hira by the publisher after being denied on NetGalley. We are a month into the year and I haven’t signed up for any reading challenges and I think I will keep it this way. I could use a less stressful reading year.

Favorite Book This Month:

My favorite read this month was Hafsah Faizal’s We Free the Stars, the conclusion to her We Hunt the Flame duology. I loved, loved, loved it. Wish me luck as I will be spending the next few days writing a review for this one. I have not written a full review in like two months, maybe more. Cover linked to Goodreads.

Least Favorite Book This Month:

No book received lower than three stars from me.

  1. Ooh I really need to read We Hunt the Flame, I keep hearing such good things about those books! When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain was my first read of the year and I really enjoyed it.

Mr. Sunshine has been on my list on Netflix for a while now–thanks for reminding me that I need to give it a try. 🙂 I hope you have a great February!

  2. A less stressful reading year sounds good! I’m trying not to do too many challenges or request very many ARCs, because I want to make this a less stressful reading year as well. That 600 page book totally counts as two. 😛 Those February releases look and sound so good. I’m sure my forever long TBR will hate me for adding them, but whatever. I want to read all the books!

    1. Yes, I am also not requesting tons of ARCs this year, especially because last year I ended up spending a whole month just reading ARCs and it stressed me out. I used to worry about the amount of books on my TBR, but I figure it’s also a good way to keep track of books even if I may never get to them.

  3. Oh no 😦 The Mirror Season looks amazing! Hopefully, you get to read it soon. I do plan on requesting it from the library once I free up a bit of space on my TBR. I really want to try Fat Chance, Charlie Vega! That cover is so pretty too!

  4. I’m constantly struggling to balance “I ONLY read four books this month” with “Yeah, but two of them were nearly 600 pages.” Chunky books take time! I really need to jump into the We Hunt the Flame duology, I’ve been curious for a while!

  5. I would agree that a 600 page novel counts as 2 books. I’m so happy you enjoyed We Free the Stars. I read We Hunt the Flame in January and now need to read the conclusion. Your February anticipated books are also on my list. So many excellent books published this month!
