I feel like I was pretty good not buying too many books the last quarter of 2019 (only eight books in three months); however, there were definitely several that I didn’t plan on getting at the beginning of the quarter but yet here they are. I know it’s super cliche, but I really am planning to be more discriminatory when it comes to my 2020 book buys. I’m usually really good at not preordering a ton of things, it’s the impulse buys I need to work on. How does one resist a good coupon though? Also, apologies for these photos. I did not have a lot of time to take them and then of course it was all cloudy and grey when I did. Let’s take a look at what books I’ve acquired…
Preorders:
1. The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern – I blame Twitter entirely for this preorder. I was itching to buy something, ran a poll, and this was everyone’s chosen book. See, it isn’t entirely my fault. Anyways, I have high hopes for this one after waiting years for more from this author after The Night Circus.
2. The Never Tilting World by Rin Chupeco – I haven’t read this one yet, but I am really excited to dive into more Rin Chupeco novels. One day I will actually finish their Bone Witch series as well.
3. Realm of Ash by Tasha Suri – Of course I preordered this companion novel to Empire of Sand (have you read this one yet, you need to!!!!). This one was just so lovely and made me unexpectedly emotional.
4. Queen of Nothing by Holly Black – I was sad to see this series end, but was pretty satisfied with the ending. I am wondering what else Black has planned, if she does for this world, because I would be interested in visiting again.
Couldn’t Resist Books:
5. Crier’s War by Nina Varella – I’ve heard so many good things about this one and I absolutely love the hate-to-love trope, which is about half the reason I ended up buying this one.
6. Chilling Effect by Valerie Valdes – I want all the books with Latinx characters in space, but unfortunately, there aren’t many. This was my last read of the year and it was so so so much fun.
7. Queen of the Conquered by Kacen Callender – I have been wanting to read this one since it came out and then all those holiday coupons and deals came around and how could I resist?
8. Monstress, Vol. 4: The Chosen by Marjorie M. Liu, Illustrated by Sana Takeda – Yes, at one point I thought Volume 3 was the final volume, but then I learned and also took advantage of another holiday deal to get this fourth one. I will be catching up on this series in 2020.
ARCs, Giveaways, and Publisher-Sent:
9. Sabrina & Corina by Kali Fajardo-Anstine – Penguin Random House was kind enough to send the Latinx Book Club a couple of books by Latinx authors to promote during Latinx Heritage Month. I selected this one because I loved it so much.
10. Fruit of the Drunken Tree by Ingrid Rojas Contreras – I also selected this novel that I haven’t read yet, but I am eager to get to.
11. Into the Tall, Tall Grass by Loriel Ryon – I won a Twitter giveaway of this ARC from the author and I am so excited to read this magical sounding MG.
12. Merci Suárez Changes Gears by Meg Medina – I also won a MG book from Loriel Ryon and I selected this one. I really need more Meg Medina in my reading life.
13. Untamed Shore by Silvia Moreno-Garcia – (not pictured, because I always manage to forget one book when I take all these pics) – Was sent this one from the publisher for review which should be up on the blog at the end of January (approximately).
14. Ghost Squad by Claribel Ortega – Had to add this one to this post because right before the new year, I received an ARC of this one from the publisher. You can’t imagine how wide my smile was when I got this in the mail.
Christmas Gifts:
15. Steel Crow Saga by Paul Krueger – I am so excited for this fantasy book and if I didn’t have a handful of ARCS to get to, this one would probably be way higher on my TBR.
16. Only Ashes Remain by Rebecca Schaeffer – I avoided getting this one when if first came out because the price was really high for some reason. Glad I finally do have it because I was really impressed with the first novel.
17. Capturing the Devil by Kerry Maniscalco – Maybe, just maybe, that I have the final book in the series, I will find time to read the third book and finish the series with this one. Maybe.
18. Jade War by Fonda Lee – I still haven’t read Jade City, but I trust all of the praise and went ahead and put this one on my wish list.
Did you get any good books for Christmas? What’s your last 2019 book purchase? Let’s talk in the comments!
This is such a good haul Alicia! I don’t know much about Chilling Effect but I keep hearing you talk about and that stunning cover have made me very excited! 😍
I cannot wait to hear your thoughts on Ghost Squad and Into the Tall, Tall Grass, which are such anticipated releases of mine! ❤

My last purchase of 2019 was An Orchestra of Minorities by Chigozie Obioma, which I’m currently reading. It’s definitely unlike anything I’ve read before, but I can’t quite make up my mind about it yet.
I’m not in touch with the latest releases and such, but the Starless Sea is one I’ve heard a lot about and it feels like one I could enjoy a lot. Also, Sabrina & Corina seems good! And the cover is beautiful as well.

I almost pre-ordered The Starless Sea, but I’m kind of glad I didn’t. I definitely didn’t enjoy it as much as The Night Circus, but I know lots of people are loving it. Hope you enjoy it!

Ahhhh so many good books! I hope you enjoy Only Ashes Remain- I thought it was a really strong sequel, and did a great job of raising questions about morality and humanity! And you NEEEED to read Jade City, it’s so great! I got approved for an ARC of Untamed Shore on Netgalley and I can’t wait to get to it. 🙂

Amazing haul! I had to get Chilling Effect by Valerie Valdes cause of the little cats on the cover lol. I am so excited for Ghost Squad. I have been following the author on twitter for a while and I am so excited for its release. It looks amazing. Can we take a moment and talk about the cover of Sabrina & Corina? Wow! Just stunning.
