Top Ten Tuesday is an original blog meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. and is currently being hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s topic is “Things That Make Me Want to Pick Up a Book.” This was a really hard list to put together. I think I know what I like, but when I sat down to write this list, it was incredibly difficult to be really specific. I’m sure on a different day, I’d have a completely different list for you.
1. I’ve Enjoyed the Author in the Past – Is this cheating? I feel like this might be cheating, but there are certain number of authors who have never let me down and I intend to pick up every book from them.
2. Magical Realism – Why is this genre so underrated? I love the way magical realism makes me feel. The atmosphere, the writing, all those magical possibilities.
3. Enemies to Lovers – Perhaps my favorite romantic trope. The perfect romance to me is one that contains this trope coupled with the slow burn. I fall for it every time.
4. PoC Front in Center in a Contemporary Novel – I want to read all the contemporary novels with PoC MCs. The vast majority of the contemporaries I pick up these days feature PoC leads.
5. Stellar Casts – I love when books are able to showcase more than one character. Some of my favorite books feature amazing ensembles.
6. Latinx-Based Fantasy – I see a lot of urban-based fantasy series with Latinx influences, but I perk up immediately if it’s Latinx-inspired high-fantasy.
7. Assassins – I haven’t read a new book about assassins lately, but I still love them. I know a lot of people think assassins are overplayed, but I actually haven’t had a ton of luck with these books. I’m always on the lookout for more assassin books.
8. Witches – I don’t think I will ever tire of witches. I love them in all settings, in all time-periods, and in any form. Good. Bad. Somewhere in between. I love it.
9. Banter – Next to enemies to lovers, I also love romance with great banter. Witty remarks flying all over the place is such fun.
10. Antiheroes – I suspect a lot of us enjoy antiheroes. I love exploring grey characters and appreciate authors pushing certain types of characters to their limits, seeing them compromise on their morals, and seeing what becomes of them as a result.
Do these also make you want to pick up a book? Do you have any recommendations for me based on these? Let me know in the comments and be sure to leave me a link to your own TTT post, so I can visit.
I’m 110% all about good banter, and I also love returning to favorite authors. I don’t care how many I’ve read by them, if their books make me happy and leave me with a smile, I’m going to return. 🙂

Great list!
I don’t think “I’ve read other books by this author and liked them” is cheating, as that’s… one of the most convincing reasons there are to pick up a book, at least for me. I know that even if the book won’t be my thing, it will probably have something I appreciate in it anyway.
And anything but with antiheroes and/or witches automatically gets more interesting for me too!

Yes! There are certain authors who write very different books, and they have introduced me to genres I wouldn’t otherwise pick up.

I find it fun that you chose plot points and character types that make you pick up a book, while I tackled the subject much more literally (cover, blogger recs!). I definitely agree with you on previously loving the author’s work – it’s definitely not cheating!

I love these open-ended topics, so much more room for us to put our own spin on them.

It’s probably the most defining reason I pick up a book.

I don’t think the first one is cheating. One of the main reasons to pick a book is knowing and loving the author. 🙂 Yay for any book with the romance trope enemies to lovers. I can’t resist. The slow burning romance is so perfect.
Happy readings! 😉

Great list! Witches made my list this week too, I can’t resist a witch story, but I so agree about ensemble novels. I desperately need to read more Latinx-inspired fantasy!

Definitely yes to witches. For some reason, I always seem to struggle with magical realism books which is sad because there’s so many good ones out there I’d like to pick up!

If picking an author you know won’t let you down is cheating, then I’m guilty too 🙂 I love magical realism, why on earth didn’t I think to add it to my list?!

I like enemies to lovers too, and if you’re one of my favorite authors… I’ll probably pre-order your book. Right now I have seven books pre-ordered (I intend to add another one as soon as I get more Amazon money) and all but one is an author I’ve read and liked before. The other has a comp title I love.

I have a ton of preorders as well. In fact, I have a blog post coming up where I list them

The number one for me was that I have enjoyed the author’s previous work. If we were successful together before, why not again?

I agree, especially if they consistently write in the same genre.

I love magical realism, too, and I don’t see enough of those books! There are a few authors that I really love and I will actively seek out their next book, but often I am really lazy about finding more books by an author I’ve enjoyed.

Based on the books I see you review, I would argue that you’re fairly devoted to books in a series. Even if you didn’t love the previous book, it seems like you’re willing to finish out the series.
