Monthly Wrap-Up: February ’19

MonthlyWrap-UPI’m back from my hiatus! Friends, I missed you a lot. I even cheated a little on my hiatus and came here and read the comments you left. But I didn’t reply and I didn’t work on any posts, so technically I didn’t cheat? While I was away from the blog, I joined a Twitter book club. You might have seen us on your TL, but I am officially one of the hosts of the Latinx Book Club. You can follow us on Twitter @latinxbookclub. I’ll have more info on the blog come next weekend, but if you want to read more books by Latinx authors, we are tackling a book together every month. Keep on eye on our Twitter account tomorrow for a special poll regarding April.

I also ended up making an Instagram account. Who am I? I have no idea what I am doing, but come follow me (@akernelofnonsense) and I will follow you back. I think I know how to do that. Maraia, if you are reading this, you are going to be my first follow! Seriously, joining a social media platform that you’ve never been on can be daunting and it’s like trying to figure out how to speak a different language. I’ve been on Tumblr for so long, I’m still in that mode, but I guess you don’t reblog photos? It’s still a little confusing to me.

So this February I picked up seven books which is pretty impressive for me. I reread Robin LaFever’s His Fair Assassin trilogy because Courting Darkness is sitting on my shelf looking very pretty, but if I dove in without a reread, I’m sure I’d be lost. I have a backlog of snapshot reviews in my drafts for some reason, so March might be filled with more reviews than usual.

(Book covers below are linked to my reviews, unless otherwise specified.)

Favorite Book This Month:

My favorite read in February was Aida Salazar’s The Moon Within, a middle grade novel that talks menstruation and reclaiming ancestral traditions. This was a really beautiful book and special shout out to the author, who was kind enough to ask her publisher to send me an arc.

Least Favorite Book This Month:

No book this month received less than three stars.

Notable Blog Posts This Month:

Kernels of Nonsense: 2019 Preorders So Far – I love preordering books and here is a look at all the 2019 books I’ve preordered so far. I might have a problem. I might have preordered more while on hiatus, so look for a part II of this post soon.

Can’t-Wait Wednesday: We Set the Dark on Fire by Tehlor Kay Mejia– I finally have this one in my hands and I am currently reading it and it is wonderful and is it on you TBR yet?

Top Ten Tuesday: Deadly Dames I Wouldn’t Mind Switching Places With for a Day – This was such a fun post to put together, the only sad part is it ended up going up while I was on hiatus, so I missed reading your comments and responding.

Reading Challenges:

Aside from the Goodreads challenge, I’m only taking part in one reading challenge.

1. The Beat the Backlist Challenge 2019 is hosted by NovelKnight. I picked up The Girl in the Tower by Katharine Arden toward this challenge this month. I need to pick up the pace.

  • Challenge Goal: 10 books; Current Count: 1 books

  1. I just followed you on IG Alicia (all pinky for your first post LOL). And 8 is on my TBR now thanks to you (I was even not aware of this book before you talked about it on your blog!). And no planned hiatus yet. Probably a short one in April when I’ll go to paris to meet some romance authors 😉

  2. Welcome to Instagram! I just finally started using mine in earnest a month or so ago, so I get your feelings about the learning curve. I followed you! 🙂

I have the first HIS FAIR ASSASSIN books sitting on my shelves unread, I very much want to read them!

Congrats on the Latinx book club, I saw you guys pulled together an amazing community quickly! You’ve convinced me to finally put WE SET THE DARK ON FIRE on my TBR, I’ve been on the fence but I think it’s one I’d like reading.

    Welcome back from hiatus!

    1. Thank you so much! I am still trying to figure out what all the buttons mean, haha. I love Grave Mercy and hope you enjoy it as well! Yes, we’ve only been a team for a week, but we are getting so much support 😭 Honestly, I’m glad there are six of us because of how big it got so fast. I am in the middle of We Set the Dark on Fire and it is sooooo good.

  3. I have been seeing your Latinx Book posts on Twitter. Yeah! And, good luck with Instagram. I stink at pictures and since I have not been to any bookish events lately, I have no new physical books to feature, but I admire all the talent on there.

  4. This year, I discovered something that really makes blogging worth it: buddy reads with conversations. I’ve been having conversation posts with Jackie @ Death By Tsundoku for our year-long #ReadingValdemar adventure. Then, out of no where, I joined Shell @ Books by the Cup when she started reading Roots by Alex Haley. Every Saturday, she shares a conversation post we created about the last 20 chapters we read. It’s been enlightening. She and I will read more together in the near future!

I’m also looking into starting a book blog podcast designed to fall asleep to. Ever have trouble sleeping? Want something bookish to put you to sleep? I might have that podcast coming.

    1. Buddy reading is awesome and when you find the right partner, it can make every book you pick up together so much more enjoyable. I saw your poll on Twitter! Maybe you can do an episode where you read to us with those famous different voices you use.

  5. Oh, I didn’t see this post until after I saw your IG account. I feel honored! I hope it’s okay that I posted about your account on my Stories. 🙈

I keep forgetting that Robin LaFever has a new book!

I’m still waiting for my library to buy The Moon Within. In the meantime, I’ve been looking for other diverse MG books, and I stumbled across The First Rule of Punk, which I think you’d love!

    1. It’s more than okay! Of course, I only vaguely understand what Instagram Stories are, but I’m very flattered nonetheless. I wasn’t planning to buy the new Robin LaFever’s book until I saw reviews of it, but it was on sale, so I thought why not. It is such a pretty book in person. Haven’t cracked it up open yet, but the cover is so gorgeous. I bought First Rule of Punk for my niece for Christmas!

  6. Welcome back! I am so excited for #LatinxBookClub. I suck at book clubbing (I don’t even know if that’s a word lol), I already the poll and voted for The Storm Runner. J.C. Cervantes was actually one of my professors in college so I’m really excited to read it.

Yay for making an instagram. I hardly ever post on my instagram anymore. I honestly don’t even check it anymore. But I am @asreadbytina on there!

I’m currently on the waiting list for We Set The Dark On Fire. I’ve heard such good things about it so I hope I love it.

I’m going to check out your preorders! I just recently preordered some books so I wonder if we have any in common.

I hope you have a wonderful March.

    1. Thank you so much, Tina! We are all very excited about Latinx Book Club. I totally voted for The Storm Runner as well. That’s so awesome that she was one of your professors! Going to follow you on IG right now. Just finished WSTDOF and loved it. Hope you do as well!

  7. Welcome back! Good luck with Instagram… I am still trying to figure it out as well and I’ve technically had the account for a while… I think getting into the habit of posting is my challenge, but there are definitely plenty of how-tos out there if you’re struggling with it!

  8. You know, I kind of thought for a hiatus you were still posting a lot. I made sure to hop over and follow you. I have an account too but it’s fairly new. It’s a mix-up off all kinds of things but you’re welcome to follow me back. You got some good books read this month. Hope March turns out just as strong for you.
