Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Loved That Need More Fans

Top Ten Tuesday is an original blog meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. and is currently being hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s topic is “Books I LOVED with Fewer than 2,000 Ratings on Goodreads.” For this topic, I avoided books that have only been out for a couple of months (with the exception of one) because there is still time for readers to pick these up. Covers are linked to Goodreads.

1. Pitch Dark by Courtney Alameda – Goodreads Ratings: 597 – Surely you have heard me mention this novel before. It’s one of those books that snuck up on me as I wasn’t the biggest fan of her previous novel, but this one about a Latina girl in space had me from the get-go.

2. Not Now, Not Ever by Lily Anderson – Goodreads Ratings: 562 – Lily Anderson is already underrated and this is her most underrated novel. It’s a retelling of The Importance of Being Earnest and it’s smart and funny and more people need to pick it up.

3. Iron Cast by Destiny Soria – Goodreads Ratings: 1,836 – This debut has been out for almost two and a half years and why haven’t more people picked it up? I love the magical system in this one and the fact that the story revolves around best friends.

4. The Education of Margot Sanchez by Lilliam Rivera – Goodreads Ratings: 1,493 – I know not a lot of people liked this one, but it’s one of those books with an unlikeable female lead that I think we need.

5. The Beautiful Ones by Silvia Moreno-Garcia – Goodreads Ratings: 855 – It kind of breaks my heart to see this one on my list. It’s such a good novel and even if romance isn’t necessarily your thing, there is a subtle magic to this world that I adored. I have a feeling the author’s next novel is going to get more attention, but this one is so good and I’d love more people to talk about it with.

6. Death, Dickinson, and the Demented Life of Frenchie Garcia by Jenny Torres Sanchez – Goodreads Ratings: 485 – This is one of my all-time favorite underrated novels. It’s one of the first YA books I picked up with a Latina MC.

7. The Epic Crush of Genie Lo by F.C. Lee – Goodreads Ratings: 1,796 –  I’m actually surprised to find this book on my list this week. It has such a loyal following online, but I sometimes forget our small corners of the internet are very small indeed. This is a really fun fantasy novel whose lightheartedness won me over.

8. A Dash of Trouble by Anna Meriano – Goodreads Ratings: 842 – This MG novel is all kinds of charming and I recently purchases it for my niece’s birthday. If you like witches, magic, and stories about family, this is one you need to pick up.

9. Kingdom of the Blazing Phoenix by Julie C. Dao – Goodreads Ratings: 727 – Another one I am surprised to find on my list this week. This sequel to Forest of a Thousand Lanterns follows the Snow-White type character Jade as she tries to take back her crown from the evil Xifeng, who we met (and loved) in the first novel.

10. The Hollow Girl by Hillary Monahan – Goodreads Ratigns: 350 – I really enjoyed this horror novel. Though I know YA horror isn’t the most popular genre, I’m surprised this one didn’t find much of a following.

Have you read and enjoyed any of these? Any you are adding to your TBR thanks to this post? Let me know in the comments and be sure to leave me a link to your own TTT post, so I can visit.

  1. “The Beautiful Ones” has a stunning cover art – and looks really interesting! Also, “Not Now, Not Ever” is one I think I read about way back when. It looks SO cute. 🙂

  2. Silvia Moreno-Garcia has another book I’m really interested in reading. It’s a vampire book which I’m really hoping to get to. The Beautiful Ones sounds interesting too, I trust your judgment. And I haven’t read very much romance-fantasy. Mostly just fantasy and romance as a subplot.

  3. Great list! Silvia Moreno-Garcia really deserves more recognition. I’ve read only one of her books so far, Certain Dark Things, which is slightly more well-known but still underrated, but I want to try more. I hope her new book (which sounds amazing) will finally get the hype it deserves. And I really need to get to Kingdom of the Blazing Phoenix! I loved Forest of a Thousand Lanterns but I haven’t been able to get to this one yet.

    1. Gods of Jade and Shadow sounds amazing. I was recently approved for an eARC, so I’m eager to get to it. Lots of people seem to be taking about it, so I’m hoping it gets more attention. Certain Dark Things is fantastic as well. Kingdom was really good. I still kind of rooted for Xifeng a bit, but she was such a good character in the previous novel.

  4. I’m surprised to see Iron Cast by Destiny Soria with less than 2000 ratings! I haven’t read it myself, but I’ve seen it on many blogs and it seemed to be a quite hyped up book.

  5. Great list! I liked The Beautiful Ones, two of Moreno-Garcia’s other novels made my list this week – she’s such an underrated author!

  6. I’m also surprised to see #7 and #9 on this list! I’ve heard so much about these books, but you make a good point about our small corner of the internet, haha. A Dash of Trouble sounds really cute, I’m going to check it out! Great list 😊

    1. I’m really surprised as well. I thought there would already be more people who enjoy Forest of a Thousand Lanterns who would want to read the sequel. Haha, you probably heard me talk about Pitch Dark. It’s one of those underrated books I keep pushing on everyone.

  7. This post really emphasizes to me that I may live in an echo chamber of books, as I have heard of almost all of these books and thought they weer super famous. Can I just say how much I love that the title and cover of The Epic Crush of Genie Lo really don’t match?

  8. Your list, especially the first half, is kind of a list of books that I meant to read but just… didn’t get around to somehow. I’ll definitely try to pick some of them up soon, though!

  9. I haven’t read any of these! I do have Pitch Dark on my TBR, but I’m not very familiar with many of these! You’ve convinced me to pick some of these books up!

  10. Great post!

I love learning about new books I may not have been aware of, so this article was great!
I think I saw you write on here before about The Beautiful Ones and I remember thinking it sounded interesting. Next time I’m at the bookstore I’m going to try and pick it up.

  11. I completely agree about The Epic Crush of Genie Lo! Such a fun, enjoyable book and one I’m surprised isn’t talked about more. I’ve had Iron Cast on my TBR for so long, I just need to get a hold of a copy 😀
