“‘Cora, come here.’ I scooped her up and took her to the bathroom across the hall. “Did Aunt Maggie give you pudding or did you get this yourself? I held her up to the sink, turned on the faucet, and used my hand to scrub her face.”
Kasie West’s books are always such a delight. One thing I really loved about her latest novel Listen to Your Heart is how present the protagonist’s family is, as shown from this excerpt when her little cousin from next door wanders into her room with her face covered in pudding. You can check out my mini-review of this one here. Cover is linked to Goodreads.
From the Goodreads Synopsis:
“Talking to other people isn’t Kate Bailey’s favorite activity. She’d much rather be out on the lake, soaking up the solitude and sunshine. So when her best friend, Alana, convinces Kate to join their high school’s podcast, Kate is not expecting to be chosen as the host. Now she’ll have to answer calls and give advice on the air? Impossible.
But to Kate’s surprise, she turns out to be pretty good at the hosting gig. Then the podcast gets in a call from an anonymous guy, asking for advice about his unnamed crush. Kate is pretty sure that the caller is gorgeous Diego Martinez, and even surer that the girl in question is Alana. Kate is excited for her friend … until Kate herself starts to develop feelings for Diego. Suddenly, Kate finds that while doling out wisdom to others may be easy, asking for help is tougher than it looks, and following your own advice is even harder.
Kasie West’s adorable story of secrets, love, and friendship is sure to win over hearts everywhere.”
I am with you on this Alicia as in many YA books parents or families are absent or sometimes bad. It is good to have something different!

I just love it when we see families and definitely wouldn’t mind more.

This does sound good. I’ve enjoyed other books by Kasie West and will have to add this one to my wishlist. This week I am spotlighting Ghost Talkers by Mary Robinette Kowal. Happy reading!
