Mami leans down: “Mira, muchacha, go take God.
Thank him for the fact that you’re breathing.”She has a way of guilting me compliant.
Usually it works. But today, I feel the question
sticking to the roof of my mouth like a wafer:what’s the point of God giving me life
if I can’t live it as my own?
I’m delighted to share with you today one of my favorite reads of the year. Elizabeth Acevedo’s The Poet X is a novel in verse that is equal parts lovely and heartbreaking. My mini-review can be read here. Cover is linked to Goodreads.
From the Goodreads Synopsis:
“A young girl in Harlem discovers slam poetry as a way to understand her mother’s religion and her own relationship to the world. Debut novel of renowned slam poet Elizabeth Acevedo.
Xiomara Batista feels unheard and unable to hide in her Harlem neighborhood. Ever since her body grew into curves, she has learned to let her fists and her fierceness do the talking.
But Xiomara has plenty she wants to say, and she pours all her frustration and passion onto the pages of a leather notebook, reciting the words to herself like prayers—especially after she catches feelings for a boy in her bio class named Aman, who her family can never know about. With Mami’s determination to force her daughter to obey the laws of the church, Xiomara understands that her thoughts are best kept to herself.
So when she is invited to join her school’s slam poetry club, she doesn’t know how she could ever attend without her mami finding out, much less speak her words out loud. But still, she can’t stop thinking about performing her poems.
Because in the face of a world that may not want to hear her, Xiomara refuses to be silent.”
I’ve been meaning to read this one. I’m glad you enjoyed it.

This sounds interesting though I’m not usually a fan of poetry or novels in verse but since it was one of your favorite reads of the year I may need to reconsider!

Do reconsider. I don’t read the genre a lot myself, but loved this one so much.

Sounds intriguing. It has been a while since I’ve read a novel in verse. This week I have Girl With a Gun by Kari Bovee – a historical mystery from my review stack. Happy reading!
