The Friday 56 is a weekly blog meme hosted by Freda’s Voice. Join us every Friday and share an excerpt from a book you’ve been reading.
Rules:
*Grab a book, any book.
*Turn to page 56 or 56% in your eReader.
*Find any sentence (or a few, just don’t spoil it) that grab you.
*Post it.
*Add your (url) post here in Linky. Add the post url, not your blog url. It’s that simple.
**Be sure to leave a link to your Friday 56 post in the comments!**
I nod, swallowing hard. My subjugator pricks my muscles. “I was just on my way to the party,” I say, trying on a smile. It doesn’t fit right with my mood, and I’ve never been an emotional chameleon like my older brother, or Faye. Mami says I wear my heart on my sleeve, and it’s usually true.
This week I’m sharing an excerpt from Courtney Alameda’s Pitch Dark which combines horror and science-fiction. To give the excerpt context: the protagonist has had a type of tech called a subjugator inserted into her person that controls some of her behavior and prevents her from telling anyone about it. You can read my mini-review here. Cover is linked to Goodreads.
From the Goodreads Synopsis:
“Tuck has been in stasis on the USS John Muir, a ship that houses Earth’s most valued artifacts—its natural resources. Parks and mountains are preserved in space.
Laura belongs to a shipraiding family, who are funded by a group used to getting what they want. And they want what’s on the Muir.
Tuck and Laura didn’t bargain on working together, or battling mutant aliens who use sound to kill. But their plan is the only hope for their crews, their families, and themselves.
In space, nobody can hear you scream . . . but on the John Muir, the screams are the last thing you’ll hear.”
I just read your review, and Pitch Dark looks like a book I’d want to read. The premise sounds unique, and I’m interested in how the science fiction and horror aspects are used.

Oh I really like the sound of Pitch Dark! I love that it combines horror and science-fiction. And although I’m not the biggest horror fan (it depends on the book) I think this would be a good read.

It’s a really good one. I think it’s more science-fiction than horror, so you might enjoy.
