Top Ten Tuesday: Frequently Used Words in YA Fantasy Titles

Top Ten Tuesday is an original blog meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. and is currently being hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s topic is “Frequently Used Words In [Insert Genre/Age Group] Titles.” I actually really like this week’s topic. When you read a bunch of books from a particular genre, you start to notice the same kind of themes, settings, and characters cropping up. Here are ten words I’ve seen a lot in the past and even recently in YA fantasy titles. Titles featured are in no way an exhaustive list. That would take me forever. Covers are linked to Goodreads.

1. Crown

2. Kingdom

3. Prince/Princess

4. Girl

5. Curse

6. Kiss

7. Dark

8. Stars

9. Shadow

10. Witch

What other titles in YA fantasy contain these words? What’s another word in YA fantasy titles that you’ve noticed appear frequently? Leave me a link to your own TTT post in the comments, so I can visit.

  1. After struggling to put my list together (I like how you put yours together SO much better – with multiple words), I realize now how many words I could have used (‘girl,’ ‘stars’). Seeing your list reminds me, I probably have lots of books with the word, ‘crown’ in them too! Fun list, Alicia!

  2. Crown and Kingdom- oh my gosh so true! All of these actually. Nice list! Girl of course is HUGE (that’s what I used) and Kiss *nods* that shows up a lot too. Stars is another… I love your examples too!

  3. It was a toss up between LOVE and KISS for me, but love won (doesn’t it always?)

It seems like readers are have a great time with fantasy books and this topic. The titles of fantasy books really do all seem to use the same words.

  4. Great list!
I noticed ‘queen’ in lots of titles. Two that I read in the recent past- Queen of the Tearling and Red Queen. I am sure there’s more but not coming to mind right now.
Also, not so much in YA but in thrillers, ‘girl’ is used way too often…the girl this and the girl that…I just wish they think about the title a bit more!
