“Balls,” Grace mumbles. “I don’t remember how to run the ticketing program!”
“You’ll do it in your sleep, Gracie,” he assures her. For a second, he almost seems nice, and not the same boy who humiliated me in front of the entire staff. A mirage, I tell myself.
If you like novels that play with the You’ve Got Mail trope (maybe in this case The Shop Around the Corner), Jenn Bennett’s Alex, Approximately is right up your alley and a perfect read for the summer. You can read my full review here. Cover is linked to Goodreads.
From the Goodreads Synopsis:
“Classic movie fan Bailey “Mink” Rydell has spent months crushing on a witty film geek she only knows online as Alex. Two coasts separate the teens until Bailey moves in with her dad, who lives in the same California surfing town as her online crush.
Faced with doubts (what if he’s a creep in real life—or worse?), Bailey doesn’t tell Alex she’s moved to his hometown. Or that she’s landed a job at the local tourist-trap museum. Or that she’s being heckled daily by the irritatingly hot museum security guard, Porter Roth—a.k.a. her new archnemesis. But life is whole lot messier than the movies, especially when Bailey discovers that tricky fine line between hate, love, and whatever it is she’s starting to feel for Porter.
And as the summer months go by, Bailey must choose whether to cling to a dreamy online fantasy in Alex or take a risk on an imperfect reality with Porter. The choice is both simpler and more complicated than she realizes, because Porter Roth is hiding a secret of his own: Porter is Alex…Approximately.“

I love stories where teens who explore love still exhibit some sensibility. You know, getting and keeping a job, focusing on a talent etc. It seems like those are the characters who end up finding the right balance between love and work.

I need my characters to be sensible, otherwise it’s hard to enjoy a novel. Of course, there should always be room for characters to learn and grow.

Sounds good. I’ll be adding it too my list since I’ve read and enjoyed other books by the author. This week I have an urban fantasy – Midnight Curse by Melissa F. Olson. Happy reading!

I love You’ve Got Mail. It’s one of the few DVDs I still own. There’s a line about sending a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils that makes me so happy. This sounds like it might be up my alley. Happy reading!

I love You Got Mail too! We need an updated version of that movie. A bouquet of newly sharpened pencils would win my over in a heartbeat.
