Series: Not a Drop to Drink, #1

The world has drastically changed . Water has become an invaluable commodity do to its scarcity. In the city, people are forced to abide by strict laws and must pay a heavy price for water and in the rural lands those lucky enough to have their own water source must guard and defend it. Lynn has spent her entire life watching over the pond outsider her home with her mother. Animals are becoming desperate for food and people are becoming bolder by the day. When an accident leaves her alone, Lynn is forced to accept the help of the stranger her mother helped years ago. When she happens upon a small group of survivors, Lynn makes a choice that will define who she is and what she is willing to protect as another group makes a move to take her land.

“Lynn’s instincts were too finely honed to allow for screaming. The rifle that had been lashed across her back snapped to the front so quickly that she would find a burn between her shoulder blades from the strap that evening.”

Mindy McGinnis’s Not a Drop to Drink is a survival story that will have your heart swelling one moment and pounding the next. Lynn is this interesting combination of experience and innocence. On one hand, her mother has trained her to be ruthless in defense of what is theirs, but has also sheltered her from the rest of the world. While highly skilled with a rifle, she lacks the kind of social skills that results from human contact. Under different circumstances, Lynn might have perished alone never knowing anyone but her mother, but in an act of compassion, her whole world changes.

Little Lucy whom Lynn ends up caring for breaths life into the often stoic protagonist. Eli, inexperienced and clueless, needs Lynn’s expertise in survival as much as she needs his lessons on living. Stebbs, the stranger her mother knew from another life, becomes a different kind of anchor for Lynn. He isn’t as ruthless as her mother and it is this relationship that has the biggest effect on her. Through these relationships Lynn learns something her mother never taught her: mercy. Lynn is fierce on her own, but with people around her she is someone to root for.

Not a Drop to Drink is a story of how one girl learns to live in a world where survival is never guaranteed.
