The Legacy by Melissa Delport

Title: The Legacy
Author: Melissa Delport
Series: The Legacy Trilogy, #1
**I received a copy of this book through NetGalley which does not affect me review**

World War III has devastated the world. The U.S. government has collapsed and the population has dwindled dramatically. Those who’d survived became victims to the anarchy that followed. In their desperation the people found a savior in Eric Dane, a young charismatic man with lofty ambitions. Now the President of the New United States of America, Dane’s grip on power seems resolute, but the leader of the new world has a clever enemy hidden right under his nose. His wife.

Rebecca Dane is living a lie. To outsiders she’s a doting wife, who hangs on her husband’s every word, but in reality she is an operative for the Rebels working to undermine her husband. But Rebecca is not the only one hiding a secret. Eric Dane is in the process of amassing an scientifically enhanced army for himself to lead against those challenging his authority and only his wife, Rebecca, stands in his way.

“The human spirit will not be subdued. It will not lie down and die or become a slave to one man’s whim.”

Melissa Delport’s The Legacy paints a grim picture of the aftermath of the disintegration of society. Under the guise of protection and peace Eric Dane has implemented authoritarian laws with little resistance from the country’s citizens. Few remember how the world used to be and even fewer are willing to fight to gain the rights that were once fundamental. Rebecca has taken it upon herself to be spy and ultimately assassin to her husband. As the story progresses we find out just how much Rebecca has sacrificed–who she has left behind and the future she has given up in order stop Eric Dane.

Not everyone is happy with the direction Rececca has taken, none more so than Aiden, her childhood friend. At first it was hard to understand the extent of his anger but after the complete picture comes to light, you completely understand why he feels her betrayal so deeply. When Rebecca comes face-to-face with Aiden, it is heartbreaking for both sides and to the reader as well. I’m not sure I buy into the love triangle between Aiden, Rebecca and Reed McCoy. Reed, another spy for the Rebels, is painted as a bit of a ladies’ man, complete with charm and looks, but I thought taking his age into account that he seemed a little immature, so I’m not sold on his appeal.

The Legacy is post-apocalyptic adventure with a science-fiction twist and an ending that will shock you.

Rating: 3/5

An avid reader herself, Melissa finally decided to stop ‘watching from the sidelines’ and to do what is her passion.

“I was driving home from work when inspiration struck, and a storyline started unravelling in my head. For a few days it was all I could think about and eventually I realised that the only way to get it out of my head, was to put it all down on paper. I started writing, and that was that.”
